California
California requires certain professionals to renew mandated reporter training regularly, depending on their role:
-
Teachers & School Personnel – Annual Renewal
Under CA AB 1432, teachers, aides, administrators, and employees of public and private schools must complete mandated reporter training every year. Proof of completion (certificate) must be submitted to the appropriate governing board, school district, or county office of education annually.
-
Daycare Providers – Every 2 Years
Licensees, administrators, and employees of licensed childcare facilities must complete training within the first 90 days of employment (or to obtain licensure) and renew every 2 years thereafter. Certificates of completion must be collected and submitted to the California Department of Social Services, which may revoke a license for noncompliance.
-
Youth-Serving Organizations – No Defined Renewal Period
Under CA AB 506, employees, administrators, and volunteers in youth-serving organizations (e.g., scouting groups, sports leagues, religious camps, coaching programs) must complete mandated reporter training. However, no renewal period is defined by law
- Recommendation: Retrain every 2 years, aligned with harassment prevention training, and ensure training during onboarding of new staff and volunteers.
Connecticut
School employees must complete the state-developed mandated reporter training and a refresher course every 3 years after the initial training, and at least once every 3 years thereafter.
